Originally discovered in France’s Rhone Valley as a cross-pollination of Syrah with the less prominent Peloursin and named after Dr. Francois Durif. Since, the varietal has seen much greater success outside of it’s native France, specifically in the United States & Australia. In the U.S., vintners came across sporadic plantings of a thick skinned varietal that produced wine similar to yet different from Syrah. The berries were smaller with densely packed clusters prompting vignerons to refer to the varietal as Petite Sirah. Petite Sirah or it’s alias, Durif is known for dark color accompanied by full-bodied flavors of blackberry, plum, black pepper and spice.
